The Restructuring of Virtuos: Impact on Workforce and Focus on AI
Virtuos, the studio responsible for projects such as Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion remastering, is currently undergoing internal restructuring with a significant impact on its workforce. Approximately 300 employees, representing about 7% of the total, are set to be laid off in various parts of the world, including China, France, and the United States.
Changes in Workforce and Financial Impact
Journalist Gauthier Andres reported that the layoffs initially began in China but are now extending to other regions, with the Lyon branch in France seeing some team members going on strike to prevent cuts and protect the continuity of the local studio. These layoffs follow the completion of the Oblivion remastering project, where Virtuos opted to focus more on quality without royalty contracts, leading to concerns among employees about future stability due to internal measures like freezing salary increases and reducing bonuses.
Increased Focus on Generative AI
Another notable change within the company is the increasing emphasis on generative artificial intelligence. Virtuos has quickly transitioned from internal presentations to mandatory training for employees on basic AI tools, indicating a potential reorganization of work processes. Despite internal challenges, Virtuos continues its support role in the production of Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater, set for release in August 2025, with Konami handling the main production and Virtuos providing technical support.
